What is ‘PLUS’ and how to pronounce it!

Let’s start first with the many meanings of  ‘plus’!

– ’Plus’ means ‘more’

– ‘Plus que’/ ‘Plus de‘ means ‘more than’

– ‘Ne .. plus’ means ‘not anymore’

– ‘Ne.. plus que’ means ‘only’ 

#1 When to not pronounce the ‘S’

The S is silent in front of an adverb or adjective with a consonant:

Je cours plus vite que toi. = I run faster than you.

Paris est plus grand que Lyon. = Paris is larger than Lyon.

When you mean ‘not..anymore’

Je ne mange plus de viande. = I don’t eat anymore

Elle ne regarde plus la télé. = She doesn’t watch TV anymore.

When you mean ‘Only’

Tu n’as plus que cinq minutes. = You only have five minutes

Vous n‘avez plus qu’à prendre le métro = You only have to take the subway.

#2 When to pronounce the S?

Actually, you voice the ‘S’, just like the ‘S’ in seven when you mean ‘MORE/‘MORE OF’ in front of a consonant

Est-ce que tu veux plus de champagne ? = Do you want more champagne?

Il a plus de frites que moi. = He has more fries than me.

When you say ‘more than+someone’ such as:

‘Plus que moi’ = more than me

‘Plus que Sarah’ = More than Sarah

#3 When to pronounce ‘Z’

You pronounce Z when placed in front a vowel.

Je ne vais plus à la gym = I don’t go the the gym anymore

Il est plus attentif = He is more attentive.
