What is ‘en train de’ in French?

Right now and no train involved! In this episode, you ‘ll learn how to express a current action, an action in progress or an unfinished action just like the present progressive, or present continuous, in English.

In French, when you express something you’re busy doing (or describe something happening as you speak), you’ll use the verb ‘to be’ (être) at present tense + en train de + infinitif.

#1 Etre en train de

je suis en train de 

tu es en train de 

il est en train de 

elle est en train de 

nous sommes en train de 

vous êtes en train de 

ils sont en train de 

elles sont en train de

Please note, unlike English, you never use it in future tense such as ‘ I’m watching a movie this afternoon’

#2 French sentences with ‘En train de’

Tu es en train de faire quoi ? = What are you doing (right now) ?

Je suis en train de faire la cuisine = I’m busy cooking (right now)

Il est en train de conduire = He’s driving (right now)

Ils sont en train de voyager = They’re busy traveling (as we speak)

Nous sommes en train de regarder la télé = we are watching TV (as we speak, right now)
