Ten French questions to ask about your food!!

Sentences around food ordering and meals

Today I have a guest! Alex is with me and she has a lot of questions and more specifically questions about what you want to ask around food or if you’re going to share someone’s meal such as ‘What’s for dinner or what’s for lunch’ or ‘Is it spicy’, ‘Is it vegetarian?’ or my favorite: What you have for desserts? So are you ready for listening to Alex and her questions?

Ten French questions to ask about your food! Ten different sentences when you have questions about your dishes, meals or things on the menu? Would you like to start with the first question?

What time is breakfast?

A quelle heure est le petit déjeuner

What’s for lunch? What’s for dinner?

Do you have another question for me? How would you say what’s for lunch? Or what’s for dinner?

Qu’est-ce qu’il y a pour le déjeuner ?

Qu’est-ce qu’il y a pour le dîner ?

Is this dish vegetarian?

You have special diet, how would you ask is this dish vegetarian? All right, that’s a good question. So it’s say that you’re sitting somewhere and you’re not sure that the dishes are vegetarian

Est-ce que c’est végétarien ?

Is this dish spicy?

I personally can’t handle spicy food. How would you ask is this dish spicy? Yeah, I agree with you. I don’t really care for spicy food. Well, I do like spicy food but being French and being raised in France. I was not exposed to spices when I was young. I have very low tolerance for it, but I do like it in a lot of Korean food and Chinese food, and Thai food, and of course, all the food from the Middle East. So how would You say that, is it spicy? So remember, we’re going to use our ‘Est-ce que’ (Eskuh)

Est-ce ce que c’est épicé ?

How Long Will It Take For My Food to Be Ready?

Do you have another question? Well, now I’m sitting at the dinner table and I’m curious how long will it take for my food to be ready? So the question is, what will it take for my food to be ready. Ok, you’re right you know sometimes it takes a while to get your order, maybe the kitchen is swamped and you want to know and keep in mind in France, people could be a bit more casual just to see what what you think is a long time. The pace can be more casual and relaxed. So how long will it take for my food to get ready?

Combien de temps ça va prendre ?

Do you have gluten-free dishes?

Do you have another question? Sure. How would you ask: Do you have gluten-free dishes? That’s a good question. And you’ll keep in mind that in France that gluten-free is not very prevalent in our country. So if you don’t eat or have a diet and it’s gluten-free you would say as you remember, we’re going to use our ‘Est-ce que’ (Eskuh)

Est-ce que c’est sans gluten ?

Is it large enough to share?

Do you have another question?? I’ve finally managed to gather my friends around the table. How would I ask if this dish is large enough to share? Is it large enough to share? Is that the question? Yes. All right, How would you would ask: Is it large enough to share? Just to let you know, it’s not too common that people share food or they ask to share it. So don’t be surprised if you don’t see a large plate of food being served. Portions tends to be a lot smaller because you when you go to the restaurant, you don’t really share and French prefer to see quality over quantity.

Est-ce qu’on peut partager ?

Ce plat ?

Ce dessert ?

Cette entrée ?

Est-ce qu’on peut partager cette entrée ?

Est-ce qu’on peut partager ce plat ?

Est-ce qu’on peut partager ce dessert ?

What kind of desserts do you have?

Any other question? I’ve got a wicked, Sweet Tooth. How can I ask the restaurant, what kind of desserts do you have? Oh yeah. That’s a great one too!

Vous avez quoi comme dessert ?

Can I get a box to go?

Now, I’ve had a great time in some great food. How would I ask: Can I get a box to go? Oh yeah, that’s a good one. I didn’t think about it. Well, okay, in France, portions tend to be small so you might not have any leftovers life to carry home.

Est-ce que vous avez une boîte pour emporter ?
