#1 French article: sentences with verbs expressing likes or dislikes

ALWAYS use LA, LE, LES, L’ (definite article)
AFTER verbs expressing likes or dislikes such as
AIMER, ADORER, DETESTER

J’aime la ratatouille (Singular Feminine)
J’adore le champagne (Singular masculine)
Je déteste les escargots (Plural)

#2 French article: sentences with other verbs

You use DE LA, DU, DES, DE L’,
AFTER all the other verbs such as PRENDRE, MANGER, VOULOIR, etc.

They are called ‘articles partitifs’ and you use them with noun-count nouns such as food, liquids, masses, etc.

Je prends DE LA ratatouille (Singular Feminine)
Je mange DES escargots (Singular masculine)
Je veux DU champagne (Plural)

Practice

J’aime LE chocolat
Je déteste LA pluie
J’adore LES films de science-fiction

Je veux DU poulet
