How to say THIS, THAT, THESE & THOSE in French

And just like that, in today’s episode, we’ll learn how to use ‘this, that, these and those in French! As usual like all French adjectives and pronouns, this/that will have different endings depending on the gender and number of noun they precede.

#1 THIS/THAT in French before a masculine noun

This/That = CE

Ce livre / Ce restaurant / Ce gâteau

EXCEPT IF THE MASCULINE NOUN STARTS WITH A VOWEL OR H, then This/that = CET

Cet appartement / Cet ordinateur / Cet homme and you have to make sure to voice an extra T sound to link the two words together!

#2 THIS/THAT in French before a feminine noun

This/That = CETTE

Cette veste / Cette huile / Cette omelette / Cette table

#3 THESE/THOSE in French before plural nouns

THESE/THOSE = CES

Ces livres / Ces gâteaux / Ces appartements / Ces vestes / Ces chaussures.

#4 THIS/THAT after a verb

Don’t translate by ‘CE/CET/CETTE’!

When you use THIS/THAT such as ‘I want this’ or ‘I like THAT’ then THIS/THAT becomes ‘ÇA’

And just like that = Et juste comme ça / I Like this = J’aime ça / I take that = Je prends ça / I don’t want this = Je ne veux pas ça

#5 THESE/THOSE after a verb

If these/those points to feminine plural, then you have to use ‘CELLES-LÀ’

I don’t want these shoes, I want those = Je ne veux pas ces chaussures, je veux celles-la.

I don’t like these colors, I prefer those = Je n’aime pas ces couleurs, je préfère celles-là.

If these/those points to feminine plural, then you have to use ‘CEUX-LÀ’

I like these wines but I prefer those = J’aime ces vins mais je préfère ceux-là.

I want these necklaces but I don’t want those = Je veux ces colliers mais je ne veux pas ceux-là.
