#1 DE TEMPS EN TEMPS

De temps en temps = from times to times/ every now and then/sometimes/once in while

Je cours de temps en temps. = I run from time to time.

On va de temps en temps au restaurant. = Once in a while we go to a restaurant.

De temps en temps, elle mange de la pizza. = Every now and then, she eats pizza.

#2 PARFOIS

Parfois = sometimes

J’écoute parfois les infos quand je conduis. = I sometimes listen to the news when I’m driving.

Elle travaille parfois le samedi. = She sometimes works on Saturdays.

Il vient parfois nous voir le dimanche = He sometimes comes to see us on Sundays.

#3 DES FOIS

Des fois = sometimes/at times.

‘Des fois’ is used mostly in spoken French. This expression is very common for ‘sometimes’.

Je vais des fois faire du vélo le dimanche  = I sometimes go biking on Sundays

Elle se couche des fois à trois heures du matin = She sometimes goes to bed at three in the morning.

Il va des fois au cinéma l’après-midi = He sometimes goes to the cinema in the afternoon.

#4 QUELQUEFOIS

Quelquefois = sometimes /at times/rarely

Don’t get confused with ‘quelque fois’ in two words meaning ‘a few times’. ‘Quelquefois’ is more formal than ‘parfois’ or ‘des fois’ and not used as often than parfois or des fois

Je mange quelquefois des croissants au petit-déjeuner. = I sometimes have croissants for breakfast.

Il prépare quelquefois le dîner. = He sometimes prepares dinner.

Tu prends souvent le métro ? Non, quelquefois. = Do you often take the subway? No, sometimes.
