Unlock this French sound!

Unlock this French sound! The letter ‘u’!

The letter ‘u’

The French U sound does not exist in English. The closest sound is  OU as in ‘book’, but unfortunately the French language has this sound also. You must be able to tell these sounds apart. The U sound is always spelled U and the OU sound is always spelled OU, so they are easy to tell apart in writing. Practice the distinction between U and OU.

Open your mouth and say ‘I’ = ee.

Keep your tongue in place.

Draw out the I until your lips are where they would be to make a whistle sound.

Purse and pucker your lips as tightly as you can.

Keeping your lips pursed, say U. U is high-pitch

Voilà the French U!
