A lot of my students struggle when they need to express for how long. Why so? Unlike English in French, you have to use a present tense to talk about an ongoing action.
Contrairement à l’anglais une action qui a commencé dans le passé et qui continue au présent utilise le présent en français.

#1 ça fait + durée = for + duration
Pour répondre à la question ‘ Combien de temps…’ (for how long)…
ça fait + time expression
Ça fait cinq ans = it has been five years
Ça fait une heure = it has been one hour
Ça fait vingt minutes = it has been twenty minutes
Ça fait trois fois = it has been three times
#2 ça fait + durée + que + subject
To be more specific, use ‘ça fait’ at the beginning of a sentence + time expression + que + subject.
ça fait trois semaines que j’habite à Paris = I’ve been living in Paris for three weeks.
ça fait une heure qu’il est au téléphone = He’s been on the phone for an hour

Ça fait 20 minutes que j’attends = I have been waiting for twenty minutes.
Ça fait un an qu’il apprend le français = He has been learning French for a year.
She has been traveling for three years = ça fait trois ans qu’elle voyage / elle voyage depuis trois ans.
You have been working for twelve hours = ça fait douze heures que tu travailles.
We’ve been here for two days = ça fait deux jours que nous sommes ici
