#1 When the verb starts with a consonant

• Pour faire une phrase negative, ajouter ne+verbe+pas quand le verbe commence avec une consonne.

je ne suis pas

je ne vais pas

je ne fais pas

je ne veux pas

je ne peux pas

Je ne dois pas

Attention! En français parlé, le ‘ne’ est silencieux. Prononcer ‘je suis pas’, ‘je vais pas’, ‘je fais pas’, etc…

#2 When the verb starts with a vowel

• Ajouter n’+verbe+pas quand le verbe commence avec une voyelle.

Je n’ai pas

Tu n’as pas

Il n’a pas

Elle n’a pas

Nous n’avons pas

Vous n’avez pas

Ils n’ont pas

Elles n’ont pas

Attention! En français parlé, prononcer ‘j’ai pas’, ‘t’as pas’, ‘il a pas’, etc.

Je n’aime pas

Can you guess the rule?

• Sandwich your verb with ‘ne’ and ‘pas to make a negative statement = Je vais

/ je ne vais pas

• Drop the ‘e’ at the end of ‘ne’ when the verb starts with a vowel and don’t stop when reading = J’ai/ Je n’ai pas
