‘See’ in French

In today’s episode, we are diving deep into one of the most common and essential verbs in the French language: voir, which means “to see”. Are you ready to speak French?

#1 How to use 'to see' in present tense

In this section, we’ll learn how to use the verb ‘voir’ (to see) in present tense in French. ‘Voir’ in French is ‘irregular’. ‘Irregular’ means the verb doesn’t follow a predictable pattern, meaning you need to learn it by heart! 

Let’s start and repeat after me (remember no difference between I see and I’m seeing in French):

  • Je vois = I see
  • Tu vois = You see
  • Il voit = He sees
  • Elle voit = She sees
  • On voit = We see/One’s see
  • Nous voyons = We see
  • Vous voyez = You see (formal/plural ‘you all’)
  • Ils voient = they see 
  • Elles voient = they see (all feminine)

#2 Examples 'See' in French in present tense

In this second section, we’re going to practice with a few examples:

  • Vous voyez le Mont Saint Michel dans la baie = You see the Mont Saint Michel in the bay.
  • Nous ne voyons pas pourquoi ! = We don’t see why!
  • Elle voit son copain tous les week-ends = She sees her boyfriend every weekends.

#3 French expressions with 'to see'

In this third section, we focus on French idiomatic expressions.

Faire Voir = To show

Exemple : Fais-voir ton nouveau téléphone != Show me your new phone!

Avoir Rien à voir = Have nothing to do with it/No connection whatsoever.

Exemple : Ce restaurant français n’a rien à voir avec la vraie cuisine française = This French restaurant has nothing to do with genuine French cooking.

Par exemple  : J’y vois plus clair = I understand better.
