How to ask questions with ‘where’ in French?

où = where

The accent does not change the pronunciation.

First, let’s remember the three levels of French: Spoken, Common, and Formal.

When you ask a question, you’ll use a different order depending to whom you talk.

#1 How to use ‘where’ in French when looking for places?

Where is this?

C’est où ?  In spoken french, you put ‘où’ as the last word of your question.

Où est-ce ? Where is this? In formal French, you will need to invert the subject and the verb such as in English with ‘are you’…

Où est-ce que c’est ? In common French, you add ‘est-ce que’ after ‘où’ and before the remaining of the sentence.

Where is the bathroom?

Où sont les toilettes ? (always knows how to ask ;-))

#2 How to use ‘where’ in French when talking to someone?

Where are you from?

Using ‘tu’ (when addressing someone you know)

Tu viens d’où ? (spoken French)

Tu es d’où ? / T’es d’où ?   (spoken French)

D’où viens-tu ? (formal French)

D’où est-ce que tu viens ? (common French)

Using ‘vous’ (when adressing someone you don’t know or more than one person (you all)

Vous venez d’où ? (spoken French)

D’où venez-vous ? (formal French)

D’où est-ce que vous venez ? (common French)

Où est-tu ?

Où est-ce que tu es ?
